A shrimp that stops grazing, turns opaque, or remains motionless in an exposed area is giving you useful diagnostic information. The difficulty is that the same outward sign can result from poor water conditions, a failed molt, a bacterial infection, parasites, or simple environmental stress. A reliable shrimp disease identification guide starts with observation, then works from the whole aquarium toward the individual animal.
Do not begin by adding medication because a shrimp looks unwell. Shrimp are sensitive to many treatments, especially products containing copper, and an incorrect treatment can turn a manageable problem into a colony-wide loss. First establish what you can see, what has changed, and whether the pattern affects one shrimp or many.
Start With the Aquarium, Not the Symptom
Disease is only one possible explanation for abnormal behavior. In shrimp aquariums, rapid changes in ammonia, nitrite, temperature, pH, hardness, or total dissolved solids can produce symptoms that resemble infection. A newly introduced shrimp may also react to transport stress or an unsuitable acclimation process before any pathogen is involved.
Test the water promptly when you see multiple shrimp acting abnormally. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero. Check temperature, pH, GH, KH, and nitrate against the needs of the species you keep. For sensitive Caridina and Neocaridina shrimp, stability is often more valuable than chasing a perfect number. A large, sudden water change can be as harmful as water that has been neglected for too long.
Look for recent triggers: a new shrimp shipment, a new plant, a filter interruption, heavy feeding, a pesticide exposure, or a dead animal hidden in the aquarium. Ask whether symptoms appeared soon after molting, after a parameter shift, or following the arrival of stock from another system. That timeline often narrows the diagnosis faster than color alone.

White or opaque muscle tissue
A white, cloudy area in the tail or body is one of the most urgent signs to investigate. Healthy shrimp muscle generally looks translucent, even in strongly colored varieties. Opacity may be associated with bacterial disease, muscle necrosis, severe stress, or poor water quality. When several shrimp develop this appearance quickly, suspect an environmental or infectious cause rather than an isolated injury.
Remove severely affected shrimp to a separate observation container if you can provide matching, stable water conditions. Then test the main aquarium and increase aeration. Do not assume every pale shrimp has the same illness. A shrimp close to molting may look temporarily dull, while true muscle opacity has a more distinct milky or cooked appearance beneath the shell.
Dark, rusty, or black spots on the shell
Localized dark marks can occur after physical damage, but expanding brown, black, or rusty lesions may indicate shell disease, often called shell rot. These lesions commonly become more obvious where the shell has been damaged or where water quality has been chronically poor. A shrimp may still feed and move normally in the early stages.
Examine whether the mark is flat and stable or enlarging and irregular. Also inspect the substrate and decor for sharp surfaces, and review organic waste management. Improving hygiene, removing decaying material, and maintaining consistent water conditions are central actions. Treatment decisions depend on the likely cause, the shrimp species, and the safety of the product for invertebrates. There is no universal medication that should be used blindly.
Green, yellow, or fuzzy material under the shell
Green material in the head or body is not always disease. Females carrying eggs may show normal reproductive coloration, and food in the digestive tract can alter the appearance of the body. However, intensely green, yellow-green, or fuzzy-looking material in the body cavity, particularly when it persists or appears as distinct growths, requires closer attention.
Some parasitic or algal-like organisms can be visible through the shell and may interfere with normal function. Compare affected shrimp with healthy animals of the same species and sex. If only one shrimp is affected, isolate it for observation rather than treating the entire colony immediately. If multiple animals show similar internal growths, review the source of recent introductions and avoid moving shrimp, plants, or equipment from that aquarium to other tanks.
White fuzz or external growths
Cottony material on a shrimp can be fungal-like growth, a secondary colonization of damaged tissue, or attached organisms. The location matters. Material around the mouthparts, swimmerets, gills, or egg mass can have different causes and consequences. Fine external organisms may also be mistaken for debris when the shrimp is first inspected.
Observe the growth while the shrimp is still in water. Does it wave independently, remain attached in tufts, or disappear after the shrimp cleans itself? A short video can be more informative than a single photograph. External growths that spread, interfere with movement, or occur on several shrimp deserve prompt isolation and closer diagnostic work.
Poor movement, surface gathering, and sudden deaths
Shrimp standing still is not automatically a disease sign. They rest, graze in one place, and become less active before molting. The warning pattern is a group of shrimp gathering near the surface or filter outlet, falling onto their sides, losing coordination, or dying within hours.
This pattern demands an immediate water-quality and oxygen check. Low dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrite, contamination, and temperature spikes can all cause rapid distress. Increase aeration, stop feeding temporarily, remove dead animals, and correct the underlying water problem carefully. Avoid making several major changes at once, because that makes the situation harder to interpret and can add more stress.
Separate Molting Problems From Disease
Molting is a high-risk period, and many apparent illnesses are actually molt-related. A shrimp preparing to molt may hide, eat less, and look slightly dull. A clean, empty shell in the aquarium is normal. A shrimp trapped in an incomplete molt, with an old shell remaining around the tail or head, is not.
Failed molts are frequently connected to unstable mineral balance, abrupt changes in GH or total dissolved solids, poor acclimation, inadequate nutrition, or chronic stress. They are not reliably solved by adding a random mineral product. Check the requirements of your shrimp species and make changes gradually. A colony that molts successfully for months and then develops repeated failures usually has a recent husbandry change worth finding.
Build a Diagnosis From Patterns
The most useful diagnostic question is not, “What medicine treats this?” It is, “What pattern am I seeing?” Record the number of affected shrimp, their size and sex, the visible signs, the speed of progression, recent changes, water test results, and whether fish or snails are also affected.
A single shrimp with a damaged shell may need observation. Multiple shrimp with opaque muscles and rapid losses require urgent system-level action. New arrivals that become ill while established shrimp remain normal point toward transport stress, source-related infection, or acclimation. Long-term residents that decline after a filter failure point toward the environment first.
Quarantine is valuable, but only when it is done properly. An uncycled container with different temperature, pH, or hardness can create a second problem. Use stable, aerated water and simple furnishings that allow inspection. Keep nets, hoses, and tools separate from the main colony when a contagious condition is suspected.
When Treatment Is Justified
Treat only after you have ruled out the most likely environmental causes and identified a reasonable disease category. Product labels must specifically state that the treatment is safe for freshwater shrimp or for the species in question. Copper-based medications are particularly dangerous for ornamental shrimp and should never be assumed safe because they are commonly used for fish.
Sometimes the correct first response is not medication but isolation, improved oxygenation, removal of organic waste, a controlled water change, and observation. This is not doing nothing. It is targeted management based on the biology of shrimp and the limits of visual diagnosis.
