It is to combine the lesion’s location, texture, speed of development, affected fish, water conditions, and, when possible, a close examination of skin and gills. Fish Fungus vs Columnaris: The Essential Difference
True external fungus in aquarium and pond fish is most often associated with water molds, commonly described as Saprolegnia-like infections. These organisms usually take advantage of damaged tissue. A fish may first have a wound from fighting, handling, parasites, bacterial disease, or poor water conditions. The fungus then grows over the compromised area.
Columnaris is a bacterial disease, commonly associated with Flavobacterium columnare. Despite its frequent nickname, “cotton wool disease,” columnaris is not a fungus. It can affect skin, fins, mouth tissue, and gills, and it may progress with alarming speed, particularly in warm water, crowded systems, or fish stressed by poor water quality.
That distinction matters because the treatment approach is different. A medication selected for fungal growth may not control columnaris. Conversely, assuming every pale lesion is bacterial can overlook a genuine fungal infection growing on an injury.
What True Fish Fungus Usually Looks Like
External fungus often forms clearly raised, fluffy tufts. Under good light, the growth may look like fine white, gray, cream, or slightly greenish threads projecting outward from the skin, fin, eye, or wound. It commonly appears on a localized area rather than as a broad, flat film.
Look carefully at what lies underneath the growth. True fungus frequently has a reason for being there: a scrape, missing scale, ulcer, damaged fin edge, dead tissue, or an area previously irritated by parasites. On eggs, fungal growth often starts on infertile or dead eggs and can spread to healthy eggs if the situation is not corrected.
Fish with localized fungus may continue eating and swimming normally early on. This does not make the condition harmless. If the underlying injury is infected, or if the fish is already weakened, the lesion can expand and secondary problems can follow. Still, the progression is often less explosive than severe columnaris.
How Columnaris Commonly Presents
Columnaris lesions are often more flat, opaque, and adherent than true fungus. They may appear as white to gray patches, a dull film, areas of excess mucus, or pale zones where the skin looks eroded rather than covered in distinct threads. The texture can look cottony at a distance, especially when mucus and damaged tissue are present.
Several locations are particularly suspicious. A pale lesion around the lips may develop into “mouth fungus,” a misleading hobby term that often describes columnaris. A gray or white patch across the back, especially just behind the dorsal fin, is often called a saddleback lesion. Frayed fins with pale edges, rapid skin erosion, and reddened areas beneath a gray surface are also common warning signs.
Gill involvement changes the urgency. Fish may breathe rapidly, hold near the surface or a water return, isolate themselves, or die with few obvious external changes. In acute cases, columnaris can kill fish before the familiar skin lesions become dramatic. A tank that appears normal in the morning can have several distressed fish by evening.
Columnaris does not always look identical. Fish species, water temperature, disease strain, stocking density, and the stage of infection all influence the presentation. Do not rule it out simply because a lesion is not a perfect textbook saddleback mark.
Clues That Help Separate the Two
The most useful clue is the pattern, not the color. A compact, three-dimensional tuft growing from a pre-existing wound leans toward fungus. A flat or slightly raised gray-white lesion spreading along the mouth, back, fin margins, or gills leans toward columnaris.
Speed is the next major clue. A fungal patch may enlarge over days. Columnaris can spread through an individual fish, or through multiple fish, much faster. If several fish show pale mouths, frayed fins, rapid breathing, or sudden deaths, treat the situation as potentially bacterial and urgent.
Water temperature can add context. Columnaris often becomes more aggressive in warmer conditions, although temperature alone never confirms the diagnosis. A rise in organic waste, crowding, transport stress, aggressive behavior, low oxygen, or elevated ammonia and nitrite can create the conditions in which bacterial disease gains momentum.
There are exceptions. A fungal lesion can become extensive, and columnaris can sometimes look genuinely fuzzy. External parasites, skin flukes, epistylis, excess mucus, and healing wounds can also confuse the picture. This is why close visual inspection and a review of recent events in the system are more reliable than hobby terminology.
Examine the Fish and the System Before Treating
Start by testing the water. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero. Check temperature, pH stability, nitrate level, and oxygenation. A disease treatment is far less likely to succeed if fish remain in toxic or oxygen-poor water. Correcting water quality is not a substitute for treatment when a serious infection is present, but it is part of treatment.
Observe every fish, not only the one with the most visible lesion. Note whether the condition is limited to one injured fish or whether several fish are affected. Look for clamped fins, heavy breathing, loss of appetite, flashing, ulcers, fin damage, and behavioral changes. Recent additions, shipping, spawning injuries, fighting, and filter disruption are diagnostically relevant.
If you have access to microscopy and know how to prepare a gentle skin or gill scrape, it can provide valuable evidence. Water molds have recognizable branching filaments. Columnaris may be supported by characteristic bacterial findings, although a definitive diagnosis can require laboratory methods. Microscopy also helps reveal parasites that may be the primary cause of skin damage.
Photograph the lesion under consistent lighting before treatment. Take one full-fish image and one close image each day. This gives you a meaningful record of progression and makes it easier to judge whether the fish is improving rather than relying on memory.
Immediate Management When Columnaris Is Suspected
When multiple fish are deteriorating quickly, prioritize clean, well-oxygenated water and reduce stress immediately. Remove uneaten food and organic debris, improve aeration, and perform an appropriate water change that does not cause sudden temperature or chemistry shifts. Avoid unnecessary netting and handling because damaged mucus and skin create more opportunity for infection.
Move severely affected fish to a properly prepared hospital system when practical. This protects observation, permits targeted treatment, and may reduce pathogen pressure in the display system. However, do not assume moving one fish solves a tank-wide outbreak. If other fish are showing signs, the main system requires attention as well.
Use a treatment specifically labeled for bacterial disease in ornamental fish and follow the product instructions precisely. Consider the fish species, water volume, filtration, and any invertebrates in the system. Some medications can affect biological filtration, plants, shrimp, snails, or sensitive species. Do not combine products casually or increase doses in an attempt to make treatment faster.
Because columnaris can involve the gills, strong aeration is essential during illness and treatment. Watch respiratory rate closely. A fish that is gasping, unable to remain upright, or rapidly declining may need immediate professional or veterinary support where available.
Management of Confirmed or Likely Fungus
For a localized fungal infection, address both the visible growth and the injury beneath it. Improve water quality, remove the source of trauma if possible, and use a treatment labeled for fungal disease in ornamental fish. Follow the full course as directed, even if the white tuft appears to disappear quickly.
Also consider why the fungus developed. A recurring fungal patch often signals persistent skin damage, aggression, parasitism, bacterial ulceration, poor handling practices, or unsuitable water conditions. Treating the tuft without solving that underlying cause invites recurrence.
Salt is sometimes used in freshwater fish health management, but it is not a universal answer. Tolerance varies greatly among fish, plants, and invertebrates, and it can be inappropriate in some systems. Do not use salt as a reflex treatment for an uncertain diagnosis, especially in a mixed aquarium or shrimp system.
Avoid the Most Common Diagnostic Mistakes
The first mistake is calling every white growth “fungus.” This delays appropriate action when columnaris is advancing through the skin or gills. The second is treating a visible lesion while ignoring water quality, stocking pressure, and the source of tissue damage.
Another mistake is judging success too early. A lesion may look cleaner after treatment while the fish remains weak, stops eating, or develops new areas of damage. Improvement should include stable breathing, normal behavior, a halted lesion edge, return of appetite, and no new cases among tankmates.
Finally, avoid treating without records. Note the date, water test results, temperature, affected species, visible signs, medication used, and response. Over time, these observations become a practical disease history for your aquarium or pond and make future diagnosis faster.
When pale lesions appear, act with discipline rather than guesswork. The closer you look at texture, location, progression, and the conditions surrounding the fish, the more likely you are to choose a treatment that gives the animal a real chance to recover.
